In 1896, noted Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius was the first to postulate the greenhouse effect - which links increases in the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to warmer temperatures.
He wasn't worried about global warming, though. His main hope was that higher human emissions of carbon dioxide would prevent another ice age.
