There are currently about 40,000 students studying Swedish at some 220 universities in over 40 countries, listed here. They are taught by some 1,000 professors and lecturers in Swedish.
The greatest concentration of university-level Swedish courses is to be found in Finland, Germany, the United States and Russia. Swedish is often included in degree programmes in Germanic languages, Scandinavian studies or the equivalent. In Finland, Swedish is an official language alongside Finnish.
